Abstract Background

My Research Philosophy

In addition to my major in Microbiology, I chose to complete a minor in Mass Communication, as I believe effective communication with the public is crucial to the operation and function of science. Making science accessible is necessary for the advancement of scientific research. The rise of digital media has changed the way people receive and interpret information about our world, and I plan to use my career as a researcher, educator, and mentor to improve science communication and accessibility.

Research

Research is our foundation of knowledge, allowing us to ask big questions and make new discoveries. I have been conducting research since my junior year of high school, and I've used the skillset and experiences I've gained to advance my undergraduate education.

Education

I plan to work as an educator throughout my scientific career, and my future career goal is to split my time between research and teaching undergraduate coursework.

Mentorship

I have served as a peer mentor throughout my time at LSU, and I look forward to the opportunity to mentor undergraduates throughout my graduate school career. I plan to take courses to develop my skills as a mentor to help recruit and support the next generation of scientists.

Communication

Communication is essential to research. I have developed my communication skills through my coursework in the Manship School of Mass Communication, my research with Len Apcar, and through presenting my research to a wide variety of audiences.
